Acid reflux and the lap band , it can sometimes go hand in hand..
You may experience acid reflux after lap band surgery, however, in most cases; you had already had it for years before.
What is the key to keeping it under control?
The same thing that kept in under control before, if you are a newbie and you are experiencing acid reflux for the first time after your Lab Band placement, I will give you advice that I wish I had received.
Watch WHAT you eat, WHEN you eat, and HOW you eat!
Sounds simple, huh! Let's start with the "What" you are eating:
*Is it spicy, acidic, tomato based, citrus based? If
it is, stay away, that is just going to increase acid.
Next, "When" are you eating:
*Are you eating during the day, and then taking a nap?
*Are you eating and then exercising?
*Are you eating late at night right before you go
to bed?
If you are,, STOP IT! You are not giving your new SMALL pouch of a stomach time to digest the food. Think of your new small pouch as a funnel, if you pour something thick in the funnel, it takes a while to go down, now try laying the funnel on its side, or shake it up a little, you will see that the contents will back up and spill! That is just like what you are doing to the food in your stomach!
Now, "How" are you eating?
*Are you eating slowly, chewing your food at least 20- 30 times before swallowing?

Sometimes you are not giving yourself enough time to digest the food, or it is too big therefore clogging the small hole leading to the bigger stomach portion. When this happens, sometimes, acid will back up and cause heartburn. My advice, slow down, chew slowly, and don't drink while you are eating.
However, this painful problem with the Lap Band is controllable! Consult your physician if the above tips are not helping. You may be required to take a prescription drug daily to control it.
