Lap Band Slippage is one problem with the lap band

From time to time the stomach wall can slip up through the lap band causing lap band slippage problems.

Slipping causes an hourglass effect with a buldge above the band and extra stomach tissue within it. This may be mild and intermittent, or it may be sever and may not resolve. Some sypmtoms are nausea and vomiting and a decrease in the ability to take foods or liquids.

Using the current surgical technique and placement of the band reduces the risk.

Diagnosis

Symptoms of acute nausea and vomiting and inability to take liquids or food. Upper GI series X-Ray is needed to confirm diagnosis.

Ability to eat more than normal with a tight band. This symptom is sometimes overlooked. When a patient continues to stretch the small pouch by over eating, over time, this can cause stomach to be pulled up through the band.

Treatment

Mild slip: Deflate the band; reinflate in one to two weeks.

Moderate slip: Deflate the band, operate to reposition band.

Severe slip: Deflate band and operate to remove band.

Prevention

Appropriate band placement by surgeon

Careful progression of diet by patient. No solid foods for 4 weeks.

Wait at least 6 weeks for first adjustment.

Avoid vomiting or purging

Avoid over eating and stretching the stomach pouch

Chew food slowly and completely

Most importantly, don't try and "BEAT THE BAND" it is there because you decided to improve your life and overall health. Work with the "Tool" not against it"!
